How to practice writing systematically?

The reason you can't write well is not because you don't have reading accumulation, but you lack the most basic writing method. You should know that practicing writing systematically is completely different from writing something randomly. Recording your inner emotions and feelings does not require systematic practice, just say what you have. But practicing writing systematically, like everything else, takes a lot of time and effort and can be draining, feeble, anxious, and exhausting ...... So how exactly do you acquire this skill?

My answer is - break down the elements of the essay and practice them one by one. Characters Characters are the most central aspect of any story, and creating a successful character is the key to great fiction. Quietly observing the people in your life and putting them down in writing is both good practice and will be a rich addition to your own library of material.

For example: the person standing next to you on the subway, try to describe his appearance and dress, guess his professional background, personality traits, interests, or make up a short story about him by observing him, where he went last night, what he went through this morning, and what he's going to do now....... Try to daily Write such a small paragraph in your cell phone memo, and note that it should be based on observation and objective description before expanding your imagination and believing in it.

Environment When I first started writing, I would often ignore environmental description in order to advance the plot. Later, I gradually realized that a good description of the environment is in fact a unique kind of literature, for the atmosphere, characterization, and even enhance the quality of the text are very helpful. When I realized this, I began to deliberately observe the surrounding environment and try to describe it in words, and found that compared with character descriptions, the difficulty lies in the fact that it is easy to be aimless and to lay out a scene randomly with a hammer in the east and a mallet in the west.

In order to solve this problem, I will define the purpose of the description before I describe the environment. For example: how would I handle the description of a hot summer day in order to emphasize the character's sadness? What would I do with a pond to set the stage for a character preparing to leave for another country? You can practice anytime, anywhere by giving yourself a "quiz" after seeing a scene at random. Let's look at another example from literature. In Dickens' Orphan of the Mist, the description of the environment of Misty City carries the function of mapping and symbolizing social problems. Before the protagonist escapes from the coffin store and pulls the bolt on the door, the author describes the setting as "It was a cold, dark night. The stars seemed farther away in the boy's eyes than at any time he had ever seen them before. There was no wind, it was so silent that the shadows cast by the trees on the ground seemed like ghosts and monsters." This description gives an outlook of horror and strangeness, and hints at the protagonist's inner fears and misery, setting the mood of the story. Emotional mood is a difficult thing to capture and to portray.

For me, the difficulty in its portrayal is that I am a person with a strong sense of obtuseness, and it is usually hard for me to capture emotions, and it is not easy for me to empathize with the emotions that my friends confide in me. My solution to this problem is to accumulate more material. On the one hand, I accumulate depictions of emotions during reading, paying special attention to capturing some complex emotions, such as being sad and grateful at the same time, and being happy and guilty at the same time. On the other hand, it is to analyze the causes and consequences of the emotions, what pushes the emotion to arise, and what different consequences the development of the emotion will produce. This will help you become more sensitive to your emotions over time. In addition to share a small Tip, pay more attention to some emotional accounts, analyze the big V their emotional story description skills, can be a great enhancement of the emotional description ability. An emotional text usually contains a lot of material, accurate angle of entry and fascinating article structure, if you can eat through to understand the mystery, for the writing ability can really get a rapid improvement.

Methodology without practice is always just methodology, the key is still to apply the method and keep practicing. Only constant practice can help us deepen our understanding of words and their accurate use. At the beginning of the systematic practice, it is easy to get "stuck" in the situation, writing and writing suddenly have nothing to say, can not write. At this time, you must not stop, squeeze out the last drop of inspiration in the brain to insist on completing, only in this way can break through the bottleneck of writing, improve their writing ability. You can try, next time when you "really can't write" don't stop writing, force yourself to continue to finish, sometimes can burst out of their own unexpected excellent description. After you've finished writing, you don't just put all your words on the shelf. Revision is where real progress begins. I usually read through the text again as soon as I finish it and make revisions. The first time I "delete" is to cut out repetitive expressions and meaningless descriptions, so as to ensure that the text is absolutely concise. The second time "change", to see if there are more accurate words, or more subtle logical structure. The third time is to put the text on hold, until they have some "distance" from the text and then modify it again, will have a more accurate understanding of the text. Accumulate a lot of accumulation about accumulation is actually a clichéd topic.

In fact, accumulation is not a very stressful thing, whether it is reading the public or skimming novels, it is all part of accumulation. However, I still recommend to keep the habit of "effective accumulation", at least one hour a day for intensive reading, with their own thinking of the accumulation will usually bring more rapid progress.
I would like to share my own method of close reading: When I read a passage of ideas, I usually take notes in three steps:
1. Describe the passage in my own words.
2、Write another paragraph imitating this idea or this writing technique.
3, Brainstorm what other scenarios this idea or this technique can be applied to. Often, these three steps lead to a deeper understanding of the text and an internalization of what is truly your own. Writing is a skill, and I believe that even the most talented creators need to practice day in and day out. Of course, there are ways and techniques to practice, but the most important thing is to take the time and put in the effort. I wish you all the best. Write in the end: to summarize, write a good text need to break down each element of the article, break through one by one, repeated practice and repeated revisions, in order to make progress.
